Thanksgiving in an ice storm

by Bob on Novermber 24, 2007

The Thanksgiving Day holiday is tomorrow here in my country. It is a day when we are supposed to get together with family and give thanks for what we have.

Thanksgiving also in these modern materialistic days, begins the Christmas shopping season, being that the day after Thanksgiving is called "Black Friday" and is the busiest holiday shopping day of the year. But it's all about money now.

I am reminded of that soliloquy from the 1997 movie, "The Ice Storm", based on the 1994 book by Rick Moody, wherein at the Thanksgiving dinner table, the little girl, Wendy Hood, played by the demure actress Christina Ricci, recites grace for meals in an unexpected way:

* * *

"Dear Lord, thank you for this Thanksgiving holiday. And for all the material possessions we have and enjoy. And for letting us white people kill all the Indians and steal their tribal lands. And stuff ourselves like pigs, even though children in Asia are being napalmed. ..."

* * *

Amazing Grace, eh ? How sweet it is. This movie is a classic.

And to think, the reason why Christina got into acting was because her dad was a primal scream therapist. We should be so lucky.
