Dawson's 1936 reflection

by Bob on January 8, 2008

I read this paper by Christopher Dawson sometime ago in the university library. It was incredibly insightful for its time in 1936 and has a strong ring of truth today. This is the excerpt below from Dawson's paper with which I was most impressed.

Religion in the Age of Revolution, Part III, 1936, The London Tablet

by Christopher Dawson

Endless investigation, endless experiment

Brings knowledge of motion, but not of stillness;

Knowledge of speech, but not of silence;

Knowledge of words and ignorance of the world:

All our knowledge brings us nearer to our ignorance,

All our knowledge brings us nearer to death,

But nearer to death no nearer to God.

Where is the life we have lost in living?

Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?

Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?
