In a box in life

by Bob on August 7, 2007

We all get stuck sometimes. Sometimes for a long time. Sometimes for life. Maybe we even never get stuck.

Getting un-stuck and out of the box is so critical to our lives. Unless the box is too comfortable and we can rest in it or as an illusion, rest in it. Like being on a paradise island somewhere where time stands still.

The trouble is when we stand still when we should be moving, whatever that means. Maybe it only applies to a crosswalk on the street with moving cars and pedestrians. Maybe it means something more profound about our lives.

Someone once wrote a book on the boxes we can get stuck in in life. But I thought it was too simplistic.

We are far too complicated not to get into and out of boxes in our lives.

"Little Boxes" as sung by Pete Seeger. Have a listen. And they were made of ticky-tacky.

So it goes.

Little Boxes by Pete Seeger

Little boxes on the hillside

Little boxes made of ticky tacky

Little boxes

Little boxes

Little boxes all the same

There's a green one and a pink one

And a blue one and a yellow one

And they're all made out of ticky tacky

And they all look just the same

And the people in the houses all go to the university

And they all get put in boxes, little boxes all the same

And there's doctors and there's lawyers

And business executives

And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same

And they all play on the golf course and drink their martini dry

And they all have pretty children and the children go to school

And the children go to summer camp

And then to the university

And they all get put in boxes, and they all come out the same

And the boys go into business and marry and raise a family

And they all get put in boxes, little boxes all the same

There's a green one, and a pink one

And a blue one and a yellow one

And they're all made out of ticky tacky

And they all look just the same
