Practical Strategies for Collaborative Online International Learning in High School

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is an educational project where students interact with foreign peers and engage in collaborative activities. While existing research notes the positive impact of COIL on students’ motivation for learning English and intercultural communicative competence, there appear to be considerable challenges for teachers to conduct such online classes in high schools, especially with beginner learners. The presentation will demonstrate how teachers can conduct COIL sessions in high school, utilizing both synchronous and asynchronous features. The presenter will introduce actual lesson outlines and practical strategies, including two effective platforms, namely WorldClassroom and Empatico, that teachers can utilize for setting up COIL sessions.

Developing communication skills and confidence in English — but what’s next?: English classes for future elementary school teachers

Throughout my English teaching career, I have consistently considered how learners use the target language and where they encounter difficulties, based on language comprehension and production research. I feel that there have been certain achievements in both the students' English proficiency and their affective development. However, I feel the need for both the individual teacher (me) and the university to take further steps.

In this talk, I will discuss the research I have conducted on second/foreign language processing and how I have incorporated it into my English teaching. Then, taking into account the English skills required of future teachers and the support students seek, I hope to explore how English education in teacher training programs should evolve.
