In-class activities that prepare EFL junior high school students for presentation and interaction
Kosuke HAGIHARA (Taisei Junior High School)
In this practice-based presentation, I will share my ideas for designing junior high school English lessons that focus on presentation and interaction. From the current course of study for junior high school (2017), the speaking section is divided into two parts; presentation and interaction. Therefore, junior high school English teachers need to teach these two sections separately. However, when teaching speaking to junior high school students, especially those with low proficiency, teachers encounter many problems. For example, it takes a huge amount of time for the students to write a script for a presentation, and it is quite difficult for them to ask questions and continue a conversation in English. To solve these problems, I introduced effective strategies that encourage students to say (write) what they want to say and several activities that provided them with many opportunities to ask questions and interact in English. After these activities, the students were actively engaged in the final presentation session, which consisted of a presentation part and the following question and answer part. In this presentation, I will present the actual activities I used and the students’ reactions after the lesson.
15:50〜16:35 Presentation 2
Learners’ Reactions to the Types of Oral Corrective Feedback in Japanese Elementary School English Class
Koji MAEDA (Nara University of Education), Naoki KAKUTANI (Shinjo Elementary School)
Giving oral corrective feedback (OCF) on learners’ errors is one of the language teachers’ important tasks in the classroom. However, it cannot always be said that enough OCF is provided in primary English classes. In our presentation, we would like to share with you our observation of some English classes in a primary school focusing on the students’ errors, teachers’ use of OCF, and the students’ reactions to them in communication activities. We would also like to share the teachers’ reflective comments on their OCF practices and the results of the questionnaires given to the students. Through the discussion, we would be happy if we could obtain any implications for the development of in-service primary teacher training programs on this topic.
