Improvement of Lessons through CBCI (Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction)
Ryosuke Yoshida (Nara Prefectural Kokusai Senior High School)
Lynn Erickson suggests CBCI, which intends to develop students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Now, I am trying to improve my lessons by using this theory. There are some reasons behind this attempt. First, I do not usually plan my lessons ahead of time. Therefore, I felt the importance of having a vision to help improve my students’ English ability. Second, I focused on developing my students’ output skills by having them write their opinions or discuss with their classmates. However, I found that most students did not think deeply about the subjects. For example, they often used generic expressions such as “I think peace is important” or “I found that we should protect nature.” My goal is to have students practice their critical thinking skills and to reinforce their opinions with more reasons. These problems can be solved by using CBCI, so allow me to share my lesson methods.

Our Passion for Cambodia and Insights from "The Project for Establishing Foundations for Teacher Education College"
Koji MAEDA (Nara University of Education), Rintaro SATO (Nara University of Education)
We participated in the development of a teacher-training university in Cambodia, working closely with Cambodian teachers to create comprehensive curriculum plans and teaching materials. We had interviews with teachers and observed English lessons at elementary schools, junior and senior high schools, and colleges. We found out that teachers were concerned about the ways of teaching and the materials used for teaching. Now, the way of teaching focuses more on getting detailed knowledge, understanding important ideas, and learning how to teach in a practical way. The new way of teaching wants teachers and students to interact more actively to make learning better. We really love this beautiful country and the people. We learned a lot from this project. We will share our affection for Cambodia, the lessons we've learned, and also suggest improvements for English teaching in Japanese schools.
