Presentation “Five Areas? Interaction and Discussion? Sure, Let’s Make Them Happen!”
The new course of study for secondary schools emphasizes the importance of reinforcing output activities by dividing ‘speaking’ into ‘presentation’ and ‘interaction’ in lower secondary schools and including ‘discussion’ in higher secondary schools (MEXT, 2018). Indeed, it is reported that the English skill Japanese business people want to improve most is speaking (IIBC, 2020) and probably most English teachers like us would agree that the same is true for our students in secondary and tertiary classrooms across the country. Therefore, it is quite natural for us to want to increase speaking activities in class. However, the following questions might arise: What kinds of activities are feasible? What kind of scaffolding is needed and to what extent should we provide it? In this workshop, we will experience some specific classroom speaking activities and consider how to plan and conduct them.
16:30〜17:15 Kiwamu KASAHARA (Hokkaido University of Education)
Presentation “Learning English with the Beatles”
I am going to show you an English course I teach with a little help from my beloved friends, the Beatles! The main aim of this English course is to develop students’ productive skills through a graded reader called The Beatles (Penguin Readers). The students are supposed to read the story and answer some given questions before the class. In class, they communicate with their classmates in English through activities such as small talk, paraphrasing, and T-or-F quizzes. They also share their opinions based on their writing assignment. Of course, they enjoy singing songs by the Beatles! I would like you to experience some of these activities in my presentation. Roll up for the mystery tour, everyone!
