Reconsidering the effectiveness of PPP based approach in the Japanese EFL
Rintaro SATO (Nara University of Education)
In Japan, EFL teaching has been shifting from a primary focus on linguistic accuracy toward fostering communicative competence, encouraging learners to build language skills through practical application. Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) has gained significant attention as an effective approach, often overshadowing the Presentation-Practice-Production (PPP) model in this shift. However, I argue that PPP based approach still holds substantial value in the Japanese EFL context. This presentation will discuss the rationale for this perspective, recognizing the strengths of both approaches. Additionally, I will invite a discussion on how the PPP model can work alongside TBLT in Japanese EFL instruction. Let’s share our thoughts and ideas!
14:55〜15:55 Presentation 2
The task is not the end: The role of task repetition and sequencing in language teaching
Ken URANO (Hokkai-Gakuen University)
If English Language Teaching aims to develop communication skills in English, activities that engage learners in spontaneous communication should play a central role in the classroom. In this talk, I will argue that these communication activities should not be viewed solely as opportunities for learners to demonstrate their abilities. Rather, they should serve as pathways for learners to build and expand their language proficiency. I will discuss the role of task repetition and suggest that repeating tasks at varying levels of complexity—from simpler to more complex—can help learners gain greater control over their language repertoire.
