1987 Southern 500

Network: ESPN

Date and time: September 6, 1987, 1:00 PM

Format: Live

Length: 3 hours (Scheduled for 4 and a half hours)

The race was broadcast live, and mostly flag-to-flag, on ESPN. It was shown as part of their RaceDay America event, which consisted of more than 9 hours of racing coverage, anchored by Jack Arute. ESPN at points diverted coverage of the race for reports on three other races- the Big Bud Shootout NHRA event, an IMSA GTP race, and a Barber Saab Pro Series event.

The race was marred by rain. The start was delayed by around 20 minutes, not starting until around 1:20 PM. As well, the race was red-flagged due to rain after 202 laps, and after a 1 hour and 32 minute delay called official at 5:15 PM. Once the race was red-flagged, ESPN would divert coverage to other programming on the RaceDay America roster, occasionally coming back for updates until the race was called.

The broadcast was also marred by technical difficulties, resulting in no sound at parts.
