1977 Rebel 500

Network: ABC

Date and time: April 3, 1977, 3:30 PM

Format: Live

Length: 1 hour

The Rebel 500 was shown partially live on the Sunday version of ABC's Wide World of Sports, alongside the Grand National Steeplechase. The start of the race was shown pre-recorded, before the last 60 laps were shown live.

The finish of the race was very controversial, as a caution came out with 7 laps to go with Bobby Allison (relief driver for Donnie Allison) leading, but when racing back to the yellow Allison hit the wall and Darrell Waltrip passed him. However, Bobby Allison thought he was still leading, as did the announcers. After a few laps of confusion, NASCAR determined Darrell Waltrip had passed him while racing back to the line. The race finished under caution, with Darrell Waltrip the winner.
