Once again, the race was joined in progress on ABC's Wide World of Sports, and was started late to accomodate it.

During the race a serious crash involved Richard Petty. Due to a red towel hanging out of the car which was seen as blood, ABC mis-took the crash for a gruesome death. In reality, Petty only suffered a dislocated shoulder.
