The Miller High Life 400 was planned to be run on February 22, 1987, and shown live and flag-to-flag on WTBS. However, on February 19, 1987 it was announced that the race would be postponed to March 8, 1987 due to snowstorms. WTBS was on hand and covered the rescheduled race live and flag-to-flag. It was billed as the "Richmond 400".

Lake Speed was scheduled to drive in this race, but because he failed to qualify, he joined Ken Squier in the commentary booth.
