Unlike most races on ESPN at the time, the Budweiser 400 was shown on same-day tape-delay, albeit in full, to avoid conflict with an airing of an IMSA GTP series race.

At the beginning of the broadcast, Dick Berggren was in the announcers booth with Larry Nuber, but early in the race Richard Petty, who sat out most of the race (ran the pace laps, then turned the car over to Joe Ruttman, but got credit for the race start and the points because he started the race) joined Nuber in the broadcast booth, while Berggren went down to his usual position in the pit area.

Interspersed in the broadcast was "Grand National Memories" segments, recapping some old races.
