1982 Gabriel 400

Network: CBS

Date and time: June 20, 1982, 2:30 PM

Format: Live

Length: 4 hours

The race was shown live on CBS, billed as a "CBS Sports Special". The race was billed as the "Michigan 400". The start time was later than normal to accomodate the live coverage.

The race was marred by rain. The first red flag came at lap 28, lasting 1 hour and 20 minutes. CBS filled the time with interviews and features on drivers like Darrell Waltrip, before then diverting coverage to highlights of the 1982 Daytona 500. Just about 10 laps later, it was red-flagged again, this time lasting 1 hour and 47 minutes. More highlights of the Daytona 500 were shown, plus interviews and a feature with Junior Johnson. At 6:30 PM, with the race still under a red flag, CBS ended it's coverage and returned to regularly scheduled programming. A update was provided around 7:00 PM during the news, and the taped finish was aired at 11:30 PM.

David Hobbs was scheduled to provide commentary, but he was replaced by Tom Sneva due to scheduling conflicts.
