1986 Miller American 400

Network: CBS

Date and time: June 15, 1986, 1:00 PM

Format: Live

Length: 3 and a half hours

The race was broadcast live and flag-to-flag on CBS, billed as a "CBS Sports Special". The race was billed as the "Michigan 400" as opposed to it's race sponsor name.

Significant emphasis was placed on the fact that it was Richard Petty's 1,000th career Cup series start (though it was actually his 999th, a convertible race was counted by mistake) A number of features were ran during the broadcast about his career, and after each commercial break brief interviews were aired with a number of other drivers, where they talked about their experiences with Petty. He also had one of the in-car cameras, pointed at his body so people could see how he moved in the car.

A tribute was also aired for Jim Trueman, an IndyCar team owner, who had died 4 days prior.
