Unit 1 - Ocean History, Eclipses & Hurricances!

Learning Target #1 - Construct a model of a solar eclipse and explain the conditions needed to predict one. Distinguish between a solar and lunar eclipse and state how the position of the moon affects the tides.

Vocabulary terms to know:

    • lunar eclipse

    • solar eclipse

    • annular eclipse

    • umbra

    • preumbra

    • rotation vs orbit

    • full moon

    • new moon

    • high & low tides

What causes a solar eclipse? Can the solar eclipse be blamed for the large escapement of Atlantic salmon from the fish farm on Cyprus Island?

Learning Target #2

Describe the early stages of the planet and major events that led to great changes including: ocean formation, first oxygen in atmosphere, first cells, first multicellular fossils, etc.

Success criteria:

  1. Explain how molecular oxygen was formed (what must have been around 1st?) in the atmosphere.

  2. Explain the order of the following groups of organisms appearance on earth: fish, reptiles, mammals, amphibians, marine mammals

  3. Using the simplified color coding describe the major earth history events (see video notes and table completed as a class).

  4. When did unicellular life begin? What is the evidence of the first cells?

Learning Target #3 Explain the conditions necessary for hurricanes to form and be sustained.

Success criteria: (The level of detail I’m expecting for your quiz.)

    1. State where U.S. hurricanes typically start and explain why.

    2. State what happens to hurricanes once they hit land and explain why.

    3. Explain why hurricanes form over water near the equator and not land or waters far from the equator.

    4. Describe the relationship between air pressure and wind speed.

    5. Describe the typical path of a hurricane formed in the Pacific Ocean

    6. Explain convection currents in air and water at the particle (molecules, atoms, or compounds) level - -e.g. what happens to warm air or water and why?

    7. State factors other than the Category of a storm that indicates how destructive it might be.

    8. State how the frequency and intensity of storms has changed over the last few hundred years and give a human-induced reason for this.

    9. State/explain how rising sea levels will affect future hurricanes

    10. Explain the difference between a tropical cyclone, a hurricane and a typhoon.

VOCABULARY WORDS TO KNOW AND USE IN YOUR ANSWERS:

• Angle of insolation

• Specific heat

• Convection current

• Storm surge

• Atmospheric pressure

• Eye

• Eyewall
