Muscle Learning Objectives for Exam

For 2020 - just the red ones.

    1. Learn the names and locations of the muscles identified in class.

    2. Understand the different factors for muscle naming: shape, # of origins, location, etc.

    3. Describe the three muscle tissue types, their characteristics, and where they can be found.

  1. Name and describe the anatomy of a whole muscle including the layers of connective tissue coverings (see picture in your notes)

  2. Describe and label the microscopic anatomy of a muscle including sarcoplasmic reticulum, sarcomere, myofibrils, actin, myosin, sarcolemma, myofilaments, etc.

  3. Describe the events of muscle contraction and the sliding filament theory - include how energy (ATP) is used in different parts of this process and the role of calcium, Na+ and K+. Know the difference between troponin and tropomyosin.

  4. Explain how a muscle cell is stimulated to contract and how sarin gas and botulin toxin each lead to paralysis.

  5. Describe the difference between slow twitch and fast twitch fibers in terms of their anatomy and physiology (aerobic vs anaerobic metabolism). Be sure to include the different coloration of muscle (aka meat) and the following terms: myoglobin, aerobic, anaerobic, blood vessels.

  6. Name joint movements in pairs (1 group of 3) and describe the types of movements found at major joints in the body

Example: Flexion & Extension ---

  1. Match a muscle from the selected list with its function based on its name (not memorizing all muscle actions.
