Expected learning

Welcome Biology Students!

This is the first week of expected learning to earn credit for the semester. Always at least read/do the red!

Please watch this short video I made to learn where we are going with this unit: Genetics Intro

Please email me if at any point you have questions. If I don't respond within 24 hours, please email me again. Sometimes I read through my emails when I don't have time to respond and I fear I will forget to go back to the ones I need to respond to. (Or I think about what I'm going to say and so I think I've already responded! I'm never intentionally ignoring anyone!)

See below if you want to see our plans for the next 4 weeks otherwise move to the bottom for this week's work (Note - please do this in OneNOte...I'm only posting here for parents or if students are having issues with OneNote)

Learning objectives:

Length of Genetics Unit - 3 weeks

  • Week 1 - Using genetics vocabulary, be able to predict the outcome of a parent cross for a monohybrid cross (1 factor trait). (Activities 1a & 1b)

  • Week 2 - Use family pedigrees to observe patterns of inheritance and predict how a particular trait is passed on. (Activities 2a, 2c --2b is optional right now but may be used for extra credit depending on how grading works this semester)

  • Week 3 - Describe the inheritance of sex-linked traits. (Week 3)

  • Week 4 - Additional practice with pedigrees & sex-linked traits or learn about other non-mendelian traits

Activities and time -- please note that the time it takes each student can be vary variable - especially in this unit. For most of you some of this you will remember from middle school but for some this may all be new. Please let me know if this work in taking you more than 2 hours a week. If so, we can modify the assignments for you. We may also have some of you use week 2 to spend more time on Week 1. We really want to make sure the needs of all students are met.

Week 1 Activities:

  • Genetics Vocabulary Guide ~30-40 minutes

  • Single Factor Cross video and practice ~-30 minutes (If the vocabulary packet took you longer than 40 minutes then just do odd problems on this one)

Week 2 Activities:

  • (Finish Week 1 before moving on… or choose to do extra practice on week 1)

  • Family Pedigrees - Quick video (only first 6 minutes)

  • Family Pedigree Practice - about 30-40 minutes

  • Royal Family Pedigree Observations ~15 minutes

Week 3 Activities:

  • Amoeba Sisters Video & Recap -- 30-40 minutes

  • Sex-Linked Practice Problems ~ 20 minutes

LESSON 1 & 2 for Week of April 20-24
