Unit 8 Respiratory System
Find info for the respiratory system at my old website!

A good review of the respiratory system:
Can you name all these structures in the picture below?
see answers below.
Learning objectives for the Respiratory System
Name and locate the major organs of the respiratory system (see pictures in your journal): nasal cavity, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, right/left lungs (and lobes), sinuses, epiglottis
Describe the anatomy of the respiratory system from trachea to alveoli and explain the tissues and features found along the way including cartilage rings, smooth muscle, stratified squamous, ciliated epithelium, etc.
Describe the role of goblet cells (they produce mucus) and cilia found on the epithelial lining of the respiratory tree (not alveoli).
Explain the role of the diaphragm and other muscles in breathing - including a discussion of air pressure differences.
Name each of the pleural membranes and describe their role with inflating the lung and describe a pneumothorax.
Explain how the body maximizes surface area in the lungs (respiratory membrane) and what process this surface area is needed for. (I didn't emphasize this but your alveoli could cover a tennis court if you spread them out! All of this surface area is needed for the diffusion.)
Describe the role of surfactant and the connection to premature babies.
Describe the causes, the physiology, the symptoms, and the general treatments for Cystic Fibrosis, asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, decompression sickness.
PRACTICE QUIZZES - really helpful!
Take a simple practice quiz to see if you have the basics! http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/quiz/q22452900
Another good (easy) one: http://www.biologycorner.com/quiz/qz_respiratory.html
This is a good one, too but #25 is not correct as mostly the air you exhale is still nitrogen even though there is still more CO2 than you started with. http://www.quia.com/quiz/1259893.html?AP_rand=1426387584
Good labeling practice! With the vocal cords all you need to know there is what the vocal cords look like! http://highered.mheducation.com/sites/0072351136/student_view0/chapter23/labeling_exercises.html#
A much more challenging one (with extra questions that we didn't get in to): http://wps.aw.com/bc_martini_fap_8_oa/93/24003/6145001.cw/-/6145004/index.html
Respiratory Diseases:
Cystic Fibrosis - the video we watched in class
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmuPdYOOrDo
Pneumonia - essentially an infection of the lungs (alveoli) (Bronchitis is infection deep in the respiratory tree - bronchi )
This Khan Academy video gives a review of the respiratory system before getting into the symptoms and causes of pneumonia including ventilator acquired pneumonia.

Pneumothorax: good explanation of pleural membranes (without using the word though!) and how a lung collapses. It also explains a tension pneumothorax.

Asthma goes back to the time of Homer (although it is increasing today). There is a strong genetic component to asthma but there are environmental triggers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82gn_rDRpHk
Decompression Sickness (The bends) - Scuba Diving (5 mins)
