Trope Variations in Tanach

Introduction

This presentation assumes that the reader is familiar with the Hebrew trope (טעמים) and their various levels (מלכיות, "realms").

It is pretty well accepted that the trope serves several functions: One is musical. Another is to help identify the accented syllable. But a third seems to be to help organize the verse, into some kind of syntactic tree structure.

It is a pretty complex issue to understand how that third function works; there has been a lot written on it. Question: Is the trope of a phrase uniquely determined by (a) the final trope and (b) the grammatical function of the words in the phrase? That would be evidence that we have a nice modular syntactical decomposition. On the other hand, if the trope varied, that would imply at least that the decomposition is not modular; rather, it at least depends on the rest of the verse as well.

I have a database of Tanach (in MUMPS), but it doesn't have access to "the grammatical function of the words" in the phrase; the words and vowels themselves are all I currently have. So I started with an easier case, where I should be able to (usually) assume that the grammatical function is the same - because the phrases are completely identical. That is the search that is done here. It restricts the search a great deal, but there is still a pretty good sample.

Below, I listed the variations - places in Tanach where the exact same phrase (consonants and vowels) found in different places has different trope. The “phrase” is an entire set of words constituting a single מלכות.

One requirement was that in the phrases compared, the last word of each has the same trope. If you don't include that restriction, you see many things like this:

The three sets are really very similar trope structures, but on three different nested levels.

For each set with variations, all distinct varieties of the phrase are given. For brevity only the first example encountered for each has its verse shown in its entirety. The "count:" tells how many examples total were found of that variety.

Results

Almost all duplicated verses in Tanach have the exact same trope. There aren't that many exceptions, cases with variations, but there are some: a couple of dozen in all of Tanach, involving a few dozen verses. There are never more than two varieties of a phrase.

For purposes of comparison, the pool from which this is drawn (all phrases in Tanach duplicated at least once) contains 4761 distinct phrases, duplicated to a total of 13136 phrases. Here are the totals broken out by length of the phrase [each variation from a set is counted separately - and they might be different lengths - so there are actually 22 pairs of variations, each of which has one or more cases]:

Many of the examples found are a result of two separate words turning into a pair connected by a maqaf.

Some larger phrases contain smaller examples that are also found on the list (for instance, see אֹ֜רֶךְ הַיְרִיעָ֣ה הָֽאַחַ֗ת and אֹ֣רֶךְ ). The smaller examples are sometimes found in more examples than the larger example that contains them.

The search does not include the "EMET" sefarim (Iyov, Mishlei, Tehillim); they have very different trope and need to be done separately.

All searches were done using text from the Keter Aram Tzovah (Aleppo Codex) from mechon-mamre.org. It would be a very good idea to repeat these searches on other text sources such as the Leningrad codex and compare. - Update: I have checked these examples on the Leningrad codex (tanach.us). They all check out, except for one (from יהושע טו,יח, where the pesiq goes away). I don't know if the Leningrad codex has more examples of its own, but the difference seems to be minor.
