Library Sessions

Sometimes these are also called Library Lessons / Classes, Library Skills, or better Information Literacy Skills.

In our school, library classes meet once every two weeks as a required part of the Information literacy programme which started in the scholastic year 2016-2017. During the library period, library books and periodicals are discussed, and students also research and learn methods of citing sources of information. They learn about the books beyond the textbook. Most importantly, the goal is for students to develop a love of reading and research beyond the textbook.

Information Literacy Skills Programme

PHILOSOPHY

The Information Literacy Skills (ILS) Programme emphasizes practical skills in locating, analyzing, retrieving and transmitting information. The Programme provides students with the opportunity to gain experience in locating and applying information to meet educational and personal needs. This means that the programme caters for all aspects of information formats, whether the information is found in a monograph or electronic format.

AIM

The Information Literacy Skills (ILS) Programme is aimed at helping students become systematic in their quest for information, encouraging them to be self-directed, life-long learners.

OBJECTIVES

    • Students learn to: locate information, interpret, evaluate and use resources in order to develop effective communication;
    • They learn to develop independent, intellectual skills that enable them to think critically about the information obtained from various sources;
    • Students will also foster the idea of producing something of their own, supported by other information they will come across.

“If information is power, and libraries equal information, then, libraries are power”
