Career highlights and achievements

Captain Martin Lloyd Sanders, Ph.D., served as the Director for Safety, Environmental Compliance and Emergency Management in Federal Occupational Health (FOH/PSC). He was tasked with overseeing department-wide safety, environmental compliance, and emergency response policy. In the past, he was the Director for Occupational Preparedness and Emergency Response and the Director for Environmental Health Services. He also served as the Director (Acting) for the Office of Health and Safety under the Center for Disease Control (CDC). He also served as Chief Scientist for USPHS from 2013 to 2017. His job involves providing support to the Office of the Surgeon General in developing and implementing strategic health policies and in leading the USPHS Commissioned Corps in recruitment, readiness, retention, mentoring, and other policy areas.

As a veteran of the U.S. Army, Captain Martin Lloyd Sanders received the prestigious Derek Dunn Memorial Scientist Officer of the Year award on April 2007 and three outstanding service medals and commendation medals as part of the USPHS Commissioned Corps. He also received two commendation medals, an achievement medal, and a National Defense Service ribbon from the U.S. Army.

Captain Martin Lloyd Sanders, received his degree in zoology from the University of California, Davis in 1990, and his Ph.D. from the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1997.
