The need and effectiveness of motivation in sports

In accomplishing all the endeavors of life, motivation exists as a prime factor. In fact, motivation is what drives many of these ventures. Athletics is a perfect example. In sports, without motivation, there can be no success. In sports, without motivation, an athlete would find it impossible to train.

Coaches in sports know this only too well; they know that motivation is the cornerstone of an athlete’s success. This is why the best coaches are extreme motivators. The first thing they do before competition seasons start is deliver motivational speeches. And from there, coaches give motivational talks and conversations every chance they get, from pre-game rituals to half-time breaks, to single-minute in-game huddles.

For younger athletes, those who are in grade school and high school, coaches use positive reinforcement, which has been known to effectively mold a student into a true athlete. This is why student athletes have quite a strong bond with their varsity coaches.

While physical training is a given, coaches know that mental preparation is just as significant. One of the things coaches have to consider is how to motivate all the members of the team at the same time, as well as know the limits of motivation. Too much positive reinforcement may either cause a stagnation in effort from the young athletes due to overconfidence and complacency or create an overzealous atmosphere that may lead to the athletes losing that spirit of friendly competition.
