Even a community garden needs to have a few friends, and we are making fast friends with the Smiling Hogshead Ranch, an urban farm under development on some disused MTA land in the industrial area off Skillman Avenue.
Not only have the ranch agreed to take on our excess compost scraps when our volume was literally crippling our composting operations, but they have also allowed us to use some of the mulch that they acquired from a local landscaper recently.
We have dropped off 3 loads of compost now and picked up the first cart load of mulch today. At a cart load at a time it is going to take a while before the paths in the garden are fully mulched, but we will get there, and we did make a pretty good start during mulch fest this year when we collected 12 bags of mulch with the help of some gardeners and their car.
Smiling Hogshead Ranch have some interesting work days coming up, including one on the 14th of April to build a water catchment system. If you are interested in helping out (these are pretty serious work days, they are a fairly organised group, and they get a lot done) please get in touch with them by email or register on their facebook event page.
