Kaikohe Economic Group (Subcommittee of Kaikohe Business Association) Report
Co-op (Leif): needs rough plan/ style – vege co-op, or for business succession eg Lyttelton co-op. Need to get it right first time. Different range of membership – eg in Australian small towns: active members, donators; Gary has legal drafting for all to go ahead; options - Hammer Hardware, producer co-op linked to NorthFresh; saw Russell McVeagh (Fonterra lawyers) to work out as a framework for small communities – specific; the longer we can keep the dollar circulating in our community the better, potentially work to remove big box movers. Eg Maleny in Queensland, and Gunnardar, NSW, Australia. So: mainly to enable business succession, and to offer a model for new businesses, make a profitable option – eg sports shop with cycle repairs. Sales pitch – long term investment, that is ‘PR job’, could attract as discussed last time investment from old Kaikohe-ites and from others internationally. Co-ops growing at 25%$ p.a. in NZ. Ready to register a co-op. When Leif goes: hopefully this EDG, Mike Edmonds, John Maurice? Ramsey Margolis is the NZ Co-operatives man.
Moved: That KBA Economic Development Group become a member of NZ Cooperatives - Elodie / Mike U
John Key visits: Steve Sangster Report. Summary - KBA to help foster revival, help anchor resurgence of Far North as a whole. Make Kaikohe destination of choice for small manufacturers; horticultural potential, reliable electricity supply etc, require favourable policy from government, level playing field for businesses in the UFBB
Northland Inc; John Vujcich Report. Northland Economic Action Group (chairman Shane Lloyd) started by Mike Sabin, feeding in to Northland Inc (combo of 3 groups, under NRC). Ask to be informed re minutes etc/ be on mailing list of both groups. Northland performs better in primary sector than the rest of NZ, there is potential for growth in dairy. Tourism flat for 20 years; low in manufacturing eg raw logs (growth potential here). Northland Inc has clear vision and goals – towards economic strategy for Northland. Eg Data Centre in Kaikohe for Northland businesses. Ask be copied to communications please.
Top Energy: Steve Sangster update: Russell Shaw adamant that Top Energy does not have a large electricity user lined up; land banking in the Ngawha area, 3x size of Wairakei. Invite Russell Shaw to 13 August KBA meeting (Sally). Heat swimming pool, kiln dry timber, tunnel houses, dairy factory heat supply. We need to sit with eg Top Energy for strategic plan that pushes for location of industry based in Kaikohe. Very good fibre networks already running between stations. Will donate power poles for lighting at Lindvart Park and then lights. Would like to set up cooperative power company in partnership with Top Energy for community power.
Tourism NZ Presentation: Mike Shaw Report $158m for tourism in next 3 years from government. Culture next after visuals/landscape for what tourists come to see. Get overseas and promote the ‘product’ – cycle trail, offer fishing
