When the night guard at the city Castle stroke the bell once, then twice to announce that it was four hours till noon few honest men or women moved in the dark streets of Vik. Most law-abiding men slept their honest sleep behind closed and barred windows. Strangely, garlic could be found above many a door and window, the dark had more than one peril even on such a silent, warm night as thirteenth of the harvestmonth.
Suddenly something large and black crossed before the moon. The beating of batwings could be heard in a steady frantic beat. Then a shout “To the left, the left! It went down that alley! “ Then an answer: “Already seen it, moron! Silence is important you twit! “. Then: “Oh, yeah! Then I’ll not say anything more at all! ”. The flapping of giant batwings continued and soon the bulky shape with the large wings swooped down a nearby alley.
On Anors Street, one of the better neighbourhoods in the city a humanlike shape dropped nimbly from the body of the giant bat-like creature. Then ran on silent feet across the street quickly enough to see another much smaller bat going over a wall belonging to one of city’s finer estates. The larger bat folded its wings and revealed itself to be a humanoid with large wings. Soon the wings disappeared into its ragged cloak.
“Let’s use stealth from now on Ugir. If the vampire lives in that house there might be some loot besides the kings reward.” The elf beside the wall turned and nodded to the other elf with a grimace. Apparently he still held to his promise of not saying anything more. Ugir turned and began climbing the smooth wall closely followed by Kezemâtarr. On the top the two thieves stood motionless looking carefully at whatever was behind.
The dark shape of a large dog could be seen in the small else idyllic garden. It paced to and from closely guarding its domain. The two elf thieves looked at eachother then Kez nodded towards the guarddog and then at Ugir with a questioning grimace. Ugir nodded then smiled a large happy smile and hoisted himself atop the wall. There he crouched before jumping out into the darkness at the same time drawing two swords.
The swordpoints dug depply into the neck of the dog and the sudden weight made it drop to the ground. Ugir released his swords stabbed one more time, then he rose starting to clean his swords. Something puzzled him when he noticed that the swords seemed free of blood. If he had meant to ponder the question any more was not clear as cold fingers took hold on his neck. “Surprise!” A hoarse voice followed by a faint smell of dirt and dust told with no doubt that the guard-dog had not been a normal dog.
“Ugir! Down.” Instinctively the Undead-slayer threw himself forward as an arrow flew through the air just above his head and hit the vampire right in the mouth. “Ae wont dae of suk kuni ounds ortals” the Vampire growled, the arrow still stuck through his mouth making it difficult to speak. Ugir barred his teethes in a ominous smile as he drew a large wooden stake reinforced by metal on the end from something that looked as a small bag. Suddenly the vampire got a frightened look in its eyes. A little maniacal laughter emanated across the elf’s lips.
As the sun bathed the highest rooftops two tired, wounded and limping, but happy rogues made their way down Main Street towards the palace. Their pouches filled to the rim with the nights loot and in a small pouch dangling from Ugirs’ neck, rattling from seven pairs of sharp teethes could be heard as the thief and the undead-slayer came from a night of work.
