HANDS ON LITERACY CONFERENCE - NOV 13, 2010:

Only 36 days until Hands on Literacy! See http://www.handsonlit.com/ -- spaces are filling up fast. Please encourage any colleagues who have been thinking about it to register soon. And if you want to put a poster up in your school to advertise it, there's a PDF poster you can download from the front page of the website.

Note that we are organizing (with Follett's support -- thanks, Tim & Jenna!) a 7 PM onwards Saturday night (after the conference) social event for our network members and people attending from overseas (so far over 40 people from schools in the area have registered, mainly librarians coming to see Ross Todd).

JOB OPENINGS AT UWCSEA:

There are two (possibly three -- fingers crossed) Teacher-Librarian positions open at United World College of Southeast Asia in Singapore for next August.

See the school vacancy listings. There are a lot more positions besides library ones.... Tell anyone you know who might be interested.

NB: APPLICATION DEADLINE = October 20th

(The jobs got posted one week ago -- sorry it took me this long to broadcast them.)

Lorena Ferreira, the current Primary Teacher-Librarian at Dover, has decided she really wants to go back into the classroom.

Hence, we have two definite openings: a Primary (K1-Grade 5) TL at Dover and a Secondary (Grade 6-10/12) at East.

However, I am throwing my hat into the ring for the Secondary TL position at East (which could open up a Primary position at East) AND there is the good possibility that the Board of Governors will approve a proposed addition of a Secondary TL at Dover for next year (it's a matter of timing -- Dover's libraries are due for major renovation in 2013 and the thought is that they might wait a year until that is more imminent). Yvonne Krishnan is the administrative Librarian at Dover in the Secondary Library.

So the field is wide open. It could be that we will have three new TLs next year. For sure we will have two.

The most exciting thing is that our school is embarking on an iLearn initiative -- 1:1 Apple laptops from Grade 6 onwards, and 2:1 below -- which means 21st century learning (think communication, collaboration, creativity, flexibility, critical thinking, etc. etc.).

The best expression of what we all strive for is Joyce Valenza's Manifesto for a 21st Century Librarian. Please include examples of how you approach this standard in your application.

Here at the East I am part of the Information & Digital Literacy team, which includes Keri-Lee Beasley and Louise Phinney -- Digital Literacy teachers (aka Technology Facilitators). Keri-Lee is fantastic to work with (Apple Distinguished Educator, PYP Workshop Leader, etc.), as is Louise (also a PYP Workshop Leader). They're doing a workshop at Hands on Literacy, if you're interested -- re using iPod Touches in the classroom.

Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions.... (or Lorena about her job)....
