Margriet Ruurs - March 2010?

Post date: Sep 25, 2009 5:15:8 AM

UPDATED Oct 30, 2009, 3 PM:

Margriet Ruurs is fully booked for her week in Singapore now.

UWCEA East will be having her on Monday the 22nd, and UWCSEA Dover will be having for Tues the 23rd and Wed the 24th - then the Canadian School has booked her for Thursday and Friday, March 25th and 26th.

She comes highly recommended. A school in KL is having her for a repeat visit -- and I have several teachers here who have seen her in schools before and they rave about her -- as both an author working with children and as a presenter to adults (teachers and/or parents).

My favorite book of hers is "My Librarian is a Camel" -- and I note her latest one is "My School in the Rainforest: How Children Attend School Around the World"/

Excerpt from correspondence with Margriet re her visit to Asia:

<<During one day in a school I can do up to 4 one hour presentations, I can do readings with younger students, using Emma's Eggs, Pacific Alphabet, etc.

I do a fun slideshow about how books are made, for all grades up to about Grade 8. This is adapted to different age levels and show students how to get ideas, genres, how illustrators and editors work, rewriting, etc. I bring uncut pages and color separations to show them the publishing process.

I recommend these talks first, followed by possible writing workshops.

If I am in your school for more than 1 day, I can do writing workshops with Grades 3 - 8. These can focus on poetry, fiction and nonfiction. I especially like doing the nonfiction writing workshops with older students since it shows them how to research, gather information and rewrite it in their own voice. I use books like In My Backyard and My School in the Rain Forest as samples of this research/writing.

I also can do pro-d workshops with teachers on writing poetry, writing nonfiction and using literature throughout the curriculum. These staff workshops can be as short as an hour after school or a half day.

In addition to this, I usually do a parent night where parents and students come to hear stories, the importance of reading aloud, etc.

Book sales: most of my books can be ordered from your regular sources (Baker & Taylor, Ingram, etc,) If you have any problems, please let me know early! I can also bring a box of books on the plane if needed. If you like I can send you a book order form to send home with students. I will be happy to sign books when I'm at your school.

Besides all titles, there are coloring sheets etc. on my website. Click on each book cover for activity ideas, printable coloring sheets and teaching guides.

As you know, cost of author visits is US$650 per day plus accommodations/meals. Thank you to Amy and Laura at Mt. Kiara International School in KL for coordinating the travel!

Latest communique from Margriet, October 15, re her schedule:

<<

The schedule looks as follows:

I will fly to Seoul, SK first.

March 9 + 10: SIS (Natasha)

March 11 + 12: YISS (Kirsten)

On the weekend I will need to fly to KL:

March 15: Alice Smith School (Bing Lim)

March 16: Garden Int School (Siobhan)

March 17, 18 + 19: Mont Kia'ra (Laura & Amy)

I will then travel on the weekend to Singapore

March 22 - 26: 3 days at Katie's school

Possibility to do another school but I can also travel to Mongolia after my 3 days in the school.

Travel to Mongolia on March 25, 26 or the weekend.

March 29 - April 2: Int School of Ulaanbatar (Michelle)

Amy and Laura, do you have a travel agent who can now start looking at best possible fares? Thanks.

My husband will likely join me for part of this trip. Of course I will cover ANY expenses associated with this (his flight but also any meals, accommodation surcharge etc.)!

Some of you asked me about accommodations. I am happy with whatever works best for your school. If you already have a teacher's apartment and if that saves you money for a hotel room, I'm happy with that! I'm easy.

NB: Margriet's flight costs will be shared by all the schools she is visiting.
