Collection Development Talk: Jan 20: Rick Susman, the Booklegger

Post date: Jan 12, 2011 9:49:9 PM

Thursday, Jan. 20th - 4:30 pm onwards at AISS in the new Senior library space. RSVP to Linda Twitchett -- Linda_Twitchett@ais.com.sg .

The special guest will be Rick Susman of The Booklegger, a bookseller and collection development specialist for middle/high school libraries, especially IB ones. He has a showroom in Melbourne, Australia, with over 50,000 international secondary non-fiction and reference books on display.

Rick will have some books to show us and will do a casual talk covering whatever we're interested in, e.g.,

  • LIBRARY COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT: Working collaboratively with teachers & curriculum to create a collection that promotes independent learning.

  • MYP & IB: What are the types of book resources that best serve the inquiry-based learning & cross-curricular style?

  • THE ROLE OF THE LIBRARIAN in schools of the 21st century: Rick asserts that there isn’t one! Not unless they create a role in the educational process for themselves. Frequently today, the role of the librarian is being subsumed by an assumption that in the age of digital information, the library is simply a provision of I.T. services. Rick discusses the ways in which librarians can be central to the learning process, giving examples of successful interventions that have dramatically increased the productive use of library materials, providing exciting learning outcomes.

  • ACCESSING A WORLD OF BOOKS: How can librarians in Singapore access the best publishing in the English-speaking world – The UK, US, Australia, Canada & South Africa?

  • COST-EFFECTIVE IMPORTS: By harnessing the power of the ISLN community, cost of importing books can be greatly improved.

Feel free to bring any other staff members, e.g. curriculum leaders, to this talk.

NB: Rick will be in Singapore and available to visit with librarians from Wed, Jan 19th through Sat Jan 22nd. So far he is booked with Linda Twitchett at AISS Thursday afternoon and with Katie Day at UWC East on Friday. Please contact Rick if you would like to meet with him.
