James M. Deem's books have received many awards, including the American Library Association's 2009 Sibert Honor Award for Bodies from the Ice: Melting Glaciers and the Recovery of the Past (Houghton Mifflin, 2008). Deem has enthralled thousands of students over the years with his lively and informative scientific and historical talks on prehistoric bog bodies, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the plaster casts of Pompeii, Egyptian mummification, and other glacier mummies.

As a former English teacher and college professor, Deem stresses critical thinking skills and intellectual curiosity while engaging students with fascinating stories and photos from his research. This year, he can also speak to students studying the Holocaust about his two newest books, Auschwitz and Kristallnacht.
