Singapore authors: SherMay Loh and Eliza Teoh

Post date: Apr 08, 2011 6:22:50 AM

Dear Librarian,

We have two Singapore authors who will be launching their first books and have planned book talks as part of their launch promotions. Both have been writing for a bit and would be able to either share their experiences with your children on translating their ideas into the written word or in the case of SherMay Loh, mystery-writing.

I have attached synopses of the books and outlines of their talks for your reference. If you would like to review the books either an extract or a copy could be sent to you for that purpose.

Regards

I am Ellie Belly.

I am 7 years old. I am in class 1J. My best friend is Cammy. I LOVE to doodle in class when teacher is not looking. And my BIG secret is this: I can talk to animals! Really!

One day, I hear a cry for help! It is a sunbird and she is in big, big trouble!

I have to help Sunbird! But first, I have to find a way to sneak out of class without Teacher or that pesky Megan noticing!

Packed with exciting classroom drama and adventure, the story of seven-year-old Ellie Belly shows a keen understanding of the mindset of a child. The book is also peppered with doodles and illustrations that will keep even a reluctant reader glued to it.

Author Profile

Eliza Teoh, a Singapore Press Holdings scholar, is a former journalist and sub-editor with The Straits Times. Ellie Belly is based on her own cheeky, rambunctious and irrepressible seven-year-old daughter named Ellie. I real life, Eliza also has an 11-year-old daughter named Gabby and a rabbit adopted from the SPCA named Taffy. Although she likes to think so, the real-life Ellie cannot talk to animals.

The Talk

Do you like to daydream? Do you have a wild and lively imagination? Why not turn your daydreams and imaginations into an interesting short story? Eliza Teoh, author of a new series of books based on a 7-year-old character called Ellie Belly, will share tips and pointers on how to create an interesting character, as well as how to write an engaging story. She will also be inviting children to submit their writing and illustrations. The best submissions will be used in her next Ellie Belly book.
