Fred Lipp: in Asia Jan/Feb 2010

Post date: Oct 30, 2009 2:34:15 AM

Award-winning picture book author Frederick Lipp will be back in Asia in January/February 2010 and is available for international school visits.

We had him at our campus (UWCSEA East) last year and will be having him again -- as he made such a big impression on our students and staff. See my library blog posting from Feb. 2009 for photos and kids' written reflections of his visit to us.

The two picture books he is best known for are THE CAGED BIRDS OF PHNOM PENH and RUNNING SHOES. Both are set in Cambodia and deal with impoverished girls who hope for a better life for their family and for an education.

Read these book reviews on The Learning Curve blog : The Caged Birds of Phnom Penh and Running Shoes -- written by Stacey Socholotuk, one of the PYP teacher-librarians at the Canadian School here in Singapore, who also hosted Fred and his wife Kitty last year. (Her blog is full of great picture book reviews and I particularly like how for each book she identifies potential PYP links, e.g., Learner Profiles, Attitudes, Concepts, and Essential Elements.)

Interested in buying Fred's books? See here for Amazon.com prices and here for Book Depository UK (which is cheaper as they ship worldwide for free).

Fred himself set up a non-profit organization in Cambodia which focuses on educating poor girls (see the Cambodian Arts & Scholarship Foundation). Click here to read their most recent newsletter about their work in Cambodia.

He and his wife live in the US and will be over in Phnom Penh from December 30, 2009, to February 10, 2010 -- so his airfare costs during that period will only be from Cambodia (a considerable savings).

Dates already booked by schools in Singapore:

  • Lycee Francais -- Mon-Fri: Feb 1-5

  • UWCSEA East -- Fri: Jan 29

  • UWCSEA Dover -- Thu: Jan 28

His booking and fee information are below:

FREDERICK LIPP

A visit by Fred and his assistant would include up to 3 presentations of 50 minutes each in one school day.

A presentation includes power point, lots of interaction with the students, cultural information, acting out of stories, readings, and Q and A with the students and staff. He also does writing workshops and keynotes for conferences.

Each school visit can be tailor-made to meet your needs for as many days as you require.

FEES:

  • $700 US net per day wired to Fred’s USA account;

  • Return airfare for two;

  • All costs for lodging, food, and ground transportation while in country (though note that Fred is willing to do a home stay to reduce your costs);

If you are in the Southeast Asia area and can book Fred during February, 2010 then round trip airfare would be from Phnom Penh.

Otherwise return airfare would be from Portland, Maine USA.
