SHORT HISTORY of US INTERFERENCE in SYRIA  Is Broad Opposition to War on Syria an Opportunity to End American Empire Responsibly? Wed. 18 September 2013 10:03 By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers , Truthout | Op-Ed   United States was involved in a number of coups that ended Syria's move toward democracy. The first coup, in 1949, removed elected President Shukri al-Quwatli and replaced him with General Husni al-Za'im.  The United States did not approve of al-Quwatli. The CIA recommended that Syria be "quarantined" through a military coup that would get rid of its elected leaders and bring in a dictatorship, so the Syrians could "mature" and hold more favourable elections in a few years, i.e. elections that resulted in candidates allied with the United States. Agent Miles Copeland describes how the CIA's "Political Action Team" worked in a 1968 book, The Game of Nations: 

In 1954, Syria edged back toward democracy and held elections that resulted in a diverse Parliament, with the top two parties being the People's Party and the Ba'ath Party, but with independents being the largest bloc. Once again, the United States went into action with Operation Wappen, another coup.  A US-assisted coup led to the Ba'ath Party taking control of Iraq in 1963, through which the US helped to bring Saddam Hussein to power. One month later, a coup without US participation brought the Ba'ath party to power in Syria, providing a path for one of its members, Hafez al-Assad, to rise to power in 1971. When Hafez al-Assad died in 2000 of a heart attack, he was replaced by his son, Bashar Al-Assad, who still rules today.  The United States has also been meddling in Syrian internal affairs. Diplomatic cables between the US embassy in Damascus and the State Department, released by Wikileaks in 2011, revealed that the United States gave financial support to political opposition groups, a television channel that broadcast antigovernment messages and related projects beginning in 2006 and continuing in the Obama era. 

There have also been reports that the United States was providing weapons. Historian William Blum writes there have been "numerous reports of forces providing military support to the Syrian rebels - the UK, France, the US, Turkey, Israel, Qatar, the Gulf states, and everyone's favourite champion of freedom and democracy, Saudi Arabia; with Syria claiming to have captured some 14 French soldiers; plus individual jihadists and mercenaries from Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Libya, et al, joining the antigovernment forces, their number including al-Qaeda veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan who are likely behind the car bombs in an attempt to create chaos and destabilize the country."

By mid-August 2011, President Obama publicly stated his belief that Assad should step down; in 2012, he admitted destroying Syria was part of a strategy against Iran. The Wall Street Journal reported that when David Petraeus headed the CIA, the agency expanded its involvement with Syrian rebels in March of 2011; sending arms and training rebels in August, 2011. In August, 2012, The NY Times reported that the United States had joined with allied countries to pay and equip Syrian rebel forces. On July 19, 2013, Assistant Secretary of State Rick Barton told an audience that the Obama administration had provided millions to pay police officers in Syria $150 per month; other reports indicated the United States was paying rebel forces the same amount. 

This September, Wall Street Journal writer Adam Entous reported that Prince Bandar of Saudi Arabia, who had also been involved in arming the Nicaraguan rebels in the Reagan era, was now working with the CIA on arming and funding the Syrian rebels. This also includes the CIA paying leaders of the Free Syrian Army to build relationships into the future when the Assad regime was removed.

US accounts for 43 percent of the world's military spending. There are military activities in many agencies. When those are all tallied, military spending is $300 billion higher. Some analysts say military spending is actually double Pentagon spending (see also). Added to that, is the US intelligence budget, spread over 16 agencies making up the United States Intelligence Community, of more than $80 billion annually. This totals a military and intelligence budget of more than $1 trillion annually.

The prime organizer of the current death squad war is one Robert Ford. Ford was appointed US Ambassador to Syria in 2010. He immediately began organizing rebel forces and facilitating the supply of weapons and cash into Syria.

Ford is a protege of John Negroponte. He served as assistant ambassador to Negroponte in Iraq during the worst period of that so-called civil war. Negroponte was the point man for the so-called civil wars in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras in the 1980s. He brought the "Salvadoran Option" to Iraq. Patraeus was also a veteran of the wars in Latin America in the 80s. 

The Salvadoran option involves the use of massive death squads and the transforming of a nation by killing or diving into exile about 1/3 of a population. 

Negroponte and Ford did this in Iraq, and now Ford is doing this in Syria. 

In the 90s, there was a UN Truth Commission for El Salvador and it detailed the atrocities committed by American organized and funded mercenaries and death squads. We see the same model in Syria. We'd be stupid to think that the same people are not running the same sort of covert/proxy war in Syria. 

The blood of the hundreds of thousands of murdered in Syria is on the same US regime operatives who have murdered people from El Salvador to the world.

Please refer to the web-links below.  At the beginning of 2013, as an NDP Riding Executive member as I interviewed over 30 Members of Parliament, Leadership candidates & their assistants concerning the Libya supposed 'No-Fly-Free-Kill-Zone' including government, Leadership Candidates & party leaders, I found not one who had researched the 'other-side'.  I found not one who responded to my offers to provide web-links to information from 3 Nobel Peace Prize laureates among other eminent leaders supporting Libya's Green Movement & Gaddafi's role as Africa's #1 Aid & Development donors.  All were completely ignorant of other perspectives, yet all were anxious for war. Not one could mention a non-biased source. Only MP Elizabeth May Green Party leader did the research & opposed this violent & illegal destruction & murder.  There is no reason why all conflicted parties would be required to engage in Both-Sides Now, Equal-Time, Recorded & Published dialogues for the whole world to review & align our support towards resolution & peace.

Mr. Jarba acknowledged the military challenges, saying that 'peace talks could proceed only when the rebels were stronger'. “Circumstances impose on us not to go unless the situation on the ground is in favor of the revolution,” he said.  Mr. Jarba could not immediately be reached for comment about his change in position, but Samir Nashar, a member of the coalition, said that Mr. Jarba’s earlier statements on peace talks had upset others in the coalition by suggesting a softer line.  

The United States and Russia, backed by other international powers, have been pushing for a peace conference in Geneva with the aim of establishing a truce and a transitional government.  The Syrian government (willingly engages in negotiations but,) has refused to accept Mr. Assad’s departure as a condition for talks and has suggested he may even run for re-election when his term expires in 2014.

For more than two years, as fighting has escalated throughout Syria, a group of villages peopled by government supporters in the mountains above this coastal city has been spared any attacks.  In spite of their proximity to the Turkish border, across which rebel fighters are armed and financed, farmers continued their lives as normal, even though as Alawites allied to the Shia sect to which President Bashar al-Assad belongs they could have been obvious targets.  At dawn on 4 August their peace was shattered. Armed rebels, led by local jihadis as well as members of Jabhat al-Nusra and the al-Qaida linked group, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, left their headquarters in the largely Sunni town of Salma. They sneaked into the al-Akrad mountains, taking control of five Alawite villages. The rebels called it Operation Liberation of the Coast and the aim was to send the government a message that even the Alawite heartland was no longer safe.  "When we got into the village of Balouta I saw a baby's head hanging from a tree. There was a woman's body which had been sliced in half from head to toe and each half was hanging from separate apple trees."

Rumours of massacres spread as some 25,000 Alawite villagers fled to Latakia. The next day the rebels captured more Alawite villages and reached Aramo, about 12 miles north of Qardaha, the Assads' home town where Hafez al-Assad, the former president, is buried in a mausoleum. Over the next few days government forces regrouped and gradually recovered the lost ground with help from air strikes as well as local paramilitaries. On 19 August Syrian state TV reported that all the Alawite villages had been freed. But they did not highlight any massacres and refrained from showing graphic images of mutilation. "For the first time the government acted discreetly because they feared a sectarian war could break out all along the coast. At the beginning they even denied massacres took place", Rajaa Nasser, an opposition politician in Damascus told the Guardian.

Independent Investigation of Syria Chemical Attack Videos and Child Abductions EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

ISTEAMS International Support Team for Mussalaha (reconciliation) in Syria is a team of interdenominational religious and lay observers from communities and spiritual centers in and outside of Syria, as well journalists.  At considerable risk in the present terrorist insurgency, ISTEAMS independently investigated the chemical weapons attack in the town of East Ghouta on August 21, 2013, as well as the video media purporting to document these events.  This report is being produced for the International Institute for Peace, Justice and Human Rights (www.ipj.ch) for dissemination to the international community.

At the end of the Cold War The Soviet Union made the statement, 'We will never be the first to use Nuclear Weapons'. 'We will never use nuclear weapons in a 1st strike'. The USA as the only nation to attack with 2 nuclear bombs on Japan who had already made signs of surrender, never reciprocated this promise to never use Nuclear Weapons in a 1st Strike. This same human immaturity & cowardice has been kept alive over the past few decades. US Secretaries of state & the President have used the terms, "All options must remain on the table" when referring to possible Israeli or American micro-nuke bunker buster bombs in Iraq, during that 'undeclared-war'. The USA had falsely accused Iraq of having Weapons of Mass Destruction.  After 5 years of searching following the invasion & death of 1,000,000 Iraqis, no such weapons were ever found making the USA guilty of one more genocidal war-crime.  When during the period of 'Glasnost' (Russian 'openness') 'Perestroika' (R. 'restructuring'), the Soviet Union voluntarily self-dissolved into its constituent Republics as full nations. The USA has never permitted its constituent 50 states to exercise sovereign rights.

We are presently in a situation that; after the US, Canada, NATO carpet bombed Libya, killing some 250,000 people overall in their long-planned Libyan destabilization as a sovereign nation, Russia & China will not permit such atrocities to happen to Syria. Russian & Chinese warships are protecting the Mediterranean coast of Syria from these same aggressors. If the US bombs from ships off the coast or air-craft bombers or fighters over Syrian airspace, these 2 nations will protect Syria, likely destroying US & gang warships. When the bombs start to fly then anything is possible but like World War 3 with annihilation of greater parts of the biosphere, massive loss of human life & increasing contamination.
