Old Age

The Khanshael, like most other dwarves, have a relatively long life span. Their longevity is nowhere near that of an elf, but they can live for 500 years fairly easily. Thanks to their warlike nature, however, the average life expectancy of one of the Kin is roughly 300 years. Khanshael warriors often have a much shorter life expectancy, sometimes as low as 150 years.

Many of the Kin, due to horrendous battle wounds, the loss of a limb, or a crippling through battle, retire to sedate lives. These dwarves use their experience and abilities to teach the younger dark dwarves their skills. In some cases, these dwarves are also able to continue working their craft, whatever it may have been.

Elder Khanshael are afforded an elevated place in dark dwarf society. They are respected and honored by Khanshael youth, and the entire community respects both their teachings and opinions. Many of these dwarves ascend to positions of leadership within the clan, but those that do not fill positions as elders still have prominent stations. Often, the clan elders hold the opinions of these dwarves in high regard, and listen intently to their aged advisors.

Often, during Khanshael trials, elder Khanshael are asked by the Clan Elders to sit in judgment, and to decide the fate of those on trial. This is a great honor for these dwarves, and it allows them to help shape the destiny of the Khanshael people.
