Back to the future: rehabilitation of children after brain injury 2010 — A mistaken optimism persists that outcomes for childhood acquired brain injury (ABI) are in general superior to those for similar injuries in adults, a misconception based on naive concepts of greater ‘plasticity’ in the immature brain. The challenges of rehabilitation after ABI, of bringing children ‘back’ to face the ‘future’ of completing childhood development with an injured brain, are reviewed in the context of the science of brain recovery from injury.

Helping children without making them helpless: Facilitating development of executive self-regulation in children and adolescents Mark Ylvisaker and Timothy Feeney 2007 — The goals of this chapter are to clarify the concept of executive function=self-regulatory (EF=SR) capacity and skills, to describe factors that influence development of EF=SR in children, and to present intervention themes under the following headings: intervention within a community context, general management guidelines, SR scripts, intervention for organizational impairment, teaching compensatory cognitive and academic strategies, and behavioral interventions.

Making Meaning: The Use of Project-Based Supports for Individuals with Brain Injury 2010 — This article summarizes and extends the literature on interventions focused on the positive affects of projects on outcomes for individuals with brain injury. This literature stands in contrast to many of the traditional approaches to cognitive rehabilitation and includes positive support and the development of personally meaningful activities for improving services to individuals with disabilties.

Mark Ylvisaker’s influence on scripts, videos and projects within a South African context 2010 — The current article overviews a range of collaborative group projects undertaken by members of the Conversation Groups for individuals living with aphasia and cognitive-communication disorders in the Department of Communication Pathology,University of Pretoria, South Africa. Projects work towards creating networks of support, and lessening barriers for the individual living with aphasia and cognitive-communication disorders.
