Diplomacy

You try to apply the pressure to the U.S.S.R. and Khrushchev. Communicating through various channels, but never on the phone, you tell the Soviet Union leader that he MUST remove the missiles from the island immediately.

You threaten Khrushchev that you will levy heavy sanctions against the communist country, getting many of the countries around the globe to stop purchasing Soviet products. You also threaten to get them barred from the Olympic games, along with every other communist country.

You promise Khrushchev that if he doesn't act now and remove the missiles, you will make him "sorry" and be forced to pursue more aggressive actions.

When Khrushchev reads your message, he tells his advisers the following:

"I know for certain that Kennedy doesn't have a strong background, nor, generally speaking, does he have the courage to stand up to a serious challenge."

He also tells his son, Sergei, that you, "would make a fuss, make more of a fuss, and then agree."

You have played right into Khrushchev's hand. He knows you well and knows you don't mean to back up your threats.
