Beach Fires Committee Report

In the last meeting, Alan Fine, Andrea Shanley, Victor Horvitz, Alan Pinshaw formed a committee to research the topic of beach fires and report back.

In their report, they stated that they met with the Mattapoisett Chief of Police and Fire Chief. They stated that the CBIA could vote to ban fires like Harbor beach and they would support this. Also, the Town has beach fire regulations that include:

  • Cook fires only
  • on-hand means to put out fire quickly
  • fires attended at all times
  • fires out by midnight
  • must have permit for season and must call the day of the fire to get permission
  • The fire department provides a list of those with permits and approval to the police at the end of each day
  • It is the police that enforces the checking of permits

It was the recommendation of the committee to not ban beach fires, but to start with education and signage to the CB community.

>> MOTION Passed to moving forward to purchase and put up beach entrance signs summarizing town regulations. Cost is estimated at $200 per sign. There are 4 beach entrance signs.

Mattapoisett Land Trust acquisition presentation

Buzzards Bay coalition and the Land Trust for last 20 years on the effort to acquire the Hiller land of 125 acres creating over 400 contiguous acres with the other Trust land.

The trust has “penned” a deal for $1.405M for the land would conservatively support 10-12 homes if were developed. The Land Trust now has 2 years to raise the money and finalize their commitments with paid consultation with appraisers and land surveyors to ensure paying fair market price.

The trust is looking to raise $1M from federal and local grants. 125 Acres of high rated wild-life system that helps with grant requests. Since this includes the Justice Holmes historic site off on Angelica, they are looking to also pursue historic preservation funds.

The Trust summarized their presentation with:

  1. Goal today is inform everyone that land is tied up for 2 years while process takes place
  2. Asked for CBIA member to join Trust fund raising committee that will do outreach, planning and fund raising
  3. Please donate. There are three tax years to do this before the deal is closed. These monies to directed to fund and will be returned if the deal does not go through. If donations made, then please include that you are a CBIA member. For a demonstration of community support helps with the grants.

Following the presentation, the CBIA members discussed whether the CBIA should do fund raisers or use part of CBIA dues as a donation. A motion was raised but was rescinded to use $25 of the CBIA 2019 Dues.

Meeting adjourned.
