James Haggerty (Unk. - )

James Haggerty was the great great great grandfather of Stella, Flora and Alice Gamble.

James Haggerty was a member of the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment of the Continental Line of the American army during the Revolution. Troops of the line were those that we know of in our time as the Continentals--the original regular army of George Washington.

James Haggerty was listed as present for duty with this regiment in August of 1777. On September 11, 1777, the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment was in action at the Battle of Brandywine near Philadelphia, against the Britsh Army. On October 4th of 1777, the 3rd Pennsylvania was in action against the British at the Battle of Germantown, near Philadelphia. It is possible that James Haggerty was wounded in one of these battles, as he shows next on a list of invalid troops at the Valley Forge encampment of George Washington, from December 1777 to June of 1778.

On August 2, 1778, James Haggerty, the great great great grandfather of Nana was listed as a member of the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment of the Continental Line. On this day he was listed as a member of the Invalid Corps, a unit for soldiers on limited service due to wounds or illness. According to Jeffrey Oakes, a National Park Service ranger at Valley Forge, "...The Invalid Corps was made up of soldiers who were wounded, but were still able to perform some sort of duty...Their involvement was strictly in support". In the case of James Haggerty, he was listed as an "artificer", a mechanic charged with repairing or maintaining American army field artillery.
