Articles About Dr. William Conrad Wile (1847-1913)

Also known as "W.C. Wile" or "William C. Wile", William Conrad Wile was the youngest son of Rev. Benjamin Franklin Wile, and younger half brother of Anna Wile Wilder. He was the uncle of James Llewellyn Wilder. Known affectionately within the family as "Uncle Will", Wile lived a life that was filled with adventure and professional accomplishment. Joining the Union Army at age fifteen, he served in both the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the Cumberland in the Civil War. He was present at the Battle of Gettysburg and months later, in Sherman's March to the Sea.

As a young man, he studied for and became a physician. He had a long and distinguished medical career, serving in several prominent positions of medical and veterans organizations.

Later in his life, he developed a great interest in the Hawaiian Islands, and traveled there by ship several times. He was an early advocate for the development of tourism in the islands. Over the course of his travels there, he became a supporter and patron of the leper colony on the Hawaiian island of Molokai.

Will Wile lived in Danbury, Connecticut, where he owned a thousand-plus acre farm. On it, he had built a beautiful mansion known as Tarrywile. The mansion and much of the farmland exist today as a popular municipal park and event venue.
