Piraeus is the port of Athens but an independent city from the capital. It is the largest port in Greece, it consists of three parts, the ferry port, the harbor and the industrial port.
The port for ferries which interests us most is located directly at the subway exit, impossible to miss.
Marinas are located east of the big port for ferry, on the left side of the peninsula of Piraeus, the marinas are called; Zea Limani Passa and Microlimano.
Microlimano is a very popular place among both Greek and tourists for its many coffees and taverna, that are also pretty overrated, go there only if you have some time to kill while waiting for your ferry.
Piraeus is traditionally considered as the birthplace of Rebetiko, a kind of popular Greek music appeared in the 20s in the port of Piraeus, while poor suburb of Athens, it was the result of the meeting of theAsia Minor refugees and immigrants from the Greek islands who came to seek a better life in Athens.
The orientalism of some and the poverty of others will put them on the sidelines of the "good society". Soon appear songs glorifying a lifestyle based on honor, goodness of heart and marginality.
Football is also part of the identity of Piraeus, with his team Olympiakos, the most popular team in Greece, symbol of the working class, when its classic rival the Panathinaikos is considered the club of thewealthy classes of Athens.
