The Rebetiko

Rebetiko is the popular Greek music, you can hear it absolutely everywhere in Greece. Appeared in the 20s in the port of Piraeus, while poor suburb of Athens, it was the result of the meeting of the Asia Minor refugees and immigrants from Greeks islands who came to Athens to seek for a better life.

Their orientalism and their poverty will put them on the sidelines of the "good society". Songs glorifying a lifestyle based on honor, goodness of heart and marginality.

The songs speak also about of hashish, alcohol, love and terrible separations.
