Gazi (Γκάζι)

Gazi is a trendy neighborhood of Athens, you will find there plethora of bars and clubs, most overrated. It is the meeting place of a Athenian youth focusing much on appearance, in front of the crowded terraces it's a real parade of bimbos with extra-short skirts and high heels.

Gazi is also known for its cultural center, the Technopolis, the main place for event of the Greek capital, concerts and exhibitions are held throughout the year. Technopolis is built on the site of a former gas factory, the name of this area 'Gazi' derive from this factory of gas.

Around 1910 brothels settled in the area, that gave to gkazi the nick name of "gkazochori", from Gkazi and Choritissa (girls).

Around the factory were gradually built in the mid 20th century a few low houses courtyards that hosted large families, Roms, day-laborers, Muslim families, Albanian and Romanian, that made of Gkazi one of the most intercultural district of Athens.

In the early 21st century, the area changed a lot, the picturesque of the neighbouhourd attracted owner of bar and restaurant, and the small old houses with courtyards were converted into cafes and bars.

In the past ten years it has been growing rapidly as the new Athens gay village. Gazi is now home to numerous gay and lesbian bars, and brothels have moved in the north, around Omonia Square...
