Insider's guide to athens

A visit of Athens for most visitors is often limited to the Acropolis and the surrounding neighborhoods, Plaka, Monastiraki, Lycabettus Hill, the Olympic Stadium and the archaeological museums.

A day or two is usually enough for these visits, then it is time to go to the islands from the port of Piraeus located in the south of Athens.

However for those who want to discover a more authentic look of Athens, they should stroll through the neighborhoods of Metaxourgeio, Exarchia, Gazi, Petralona, Thissio or Psiri, there you will not find ancient ruins but you will receive the pulse of the Greek capital. There the beauty is somewhere else, in the bars and coffees, on the walls, in the relaxed and creative atmosphere that emanates from the street.

It should be notified also that to take full advantage of Athens and all the neighborhoods mentioned above, avoid to go there in summer, especially in August, when the capital is completely deserted by its inhabitants, which removes much the charm of the city.
