Abstract

This is an ongoing study of grammar in first language (L1) education aimed at (1) increasing knowledge about what constitutes good grammar-teaching aids and (2) bridging the gap between research and practice in the field. It focuses on Swedish schools in Finland. The study’s conceptual framework is grounded in pedagogical content knowledge in grammar education. Conceived as action research, it employs critical ethnography. The research questions include:

  1. What are the starting points for good grammar teaching and learning?
  2. What are the teachers, the pupils, and the researcher learning in the process of developing grammar-teaching aids?
  3. What do the designed grammar-teaching aids look like?

Six teachers in Swedish-speaking schools in Finland and the researcher are collaborating on this research by designing and integrating teaching aids in classrooms. This action research based study’s potential significance is utilizing a comprehensive approach to viewing, teaching, and learning grammar in L1.
