沿岸魚類の資源管理には，加入量や産卵親魚量推定のための年齢別漁獲尾数の情報が必須です．年齢組成を推定する手法として，体長組成法や切断法は簡便ですが，高齢魚について精度良く年級分離することが困難です．一方，個体レベルでの年齢査定法は，高齢魚も含めた年齢組成，年級豊度推定に有用であり，また，資源生態の諸パラメータ（成長，加入年齢，寿命，成熟年齢）も得らます．

魚類の年齢査定については，以前より耳石を用いて「表面観察法」あるいは「薄片法」による年齢査定が広くおこなわれています．前者では，耳石をそのまま浸透液（水やキシレン）に入れて，あるいは表面を研磨した後に浸透液（キシレン，グリセリン）に入れて ，透過光下で年齢構造を観察する．後者は，横断切片を作成し，透過光で年齢構造を観察する方法です．近年では，表面観察法では高齢魚の査定が困難である等の理由から，薄片法が用いられています．しかし，耳石にみられる輪紋において何が年齢表示構造か，不透明帯とは何かといった基本的な判断基準は示されていません．耳石を用いて年齢査定をする際の観察マニュアルを作成することを究極目的として，種々の魚類の耳石年輪構造を記載することによって，普遍的な査定基準を提示することを目的としています．

Fisheries catch by age is the essential information to estimate recruits and spawning stocks, for examination of fisheries management strategy. Body length frequency analysis is a traditional method for age determination. Age characters method (i.e. sclerochronology, the study of calcified structures), has an advantage which is based on individual age to know age composition（including old aged fish), year class abundance, and subjects of fisheries biology (recruitment age, maturing age, life span, etc.). I have developed aging techniques using otoliths such as sectioning method. Presenting details of annual structures in otoith section, I am trying to make a manual of otolithometry.
