At Ste. Genevieve High School, we strive to create a focused and engaging learning environment where every student can thrive. To ensure the highest quality of education and to minimize distractions, we are reaching out to seek your partnership regarding the use of personal electronic devices during school hours.
In recent years, we have observed that the use of personal electronic devices during the school day can be a significant distraction, affecting not only our students’ ability to concentrate but also the overall learning environment. Studies have shown that frequent device use can lead to decreased academic performance, increased anxiety, and diminished social interaction. Despite the convenience and advantages of technology, its misuse in an educational setting can undermine the learning experience.
We have also heard from employers who have voiced concern about increased personal electronic device distractions in the workplace. As we prepare students for the workforce, we have an obligation to model limited distractions within the educational setting.
To address these concerns, we previously established a clear personal electronic device policy, and recent legislation has further supported the longstanding policy at SGHS. In alignment with Missouri Senate Bill 68, the following disciplinary steps will be enforced when students violate the personal electronic device policy:
1st Offense: The device will be held in the school vault overnight, and the student may retrieve it at the end of the next school day unless a parent picks it up from the high school office sooner.
2nd Offense: Same as above, plus the student will receive one day of In-School Suspension (ISS).
3rd Offense: Same as above, plus two days of ISS.
4th Offense: Same vault/parent pick-up policy, plus one day of Out-of-School Suspension (OSS).
5th and Subsequent Offenses: Will result in additional disciplinary consequences, which may include extended suspension or further administrative action.
Personal Electronic Devices – Off and Away
To help students stay focused and engaged during school hours and be in compliance with SB 68, the expectations for all personal electronic devices are:
Devices Off and Away: Students must turn off their personal electronic devices and store them in their backpacks during school hours, including during classes, breaks, and lunch periods or follow the practices that are established by their classroom teacher.
Emergency Use: If a student needs to contact you in an urgent situation, they may do so through the school office. Likewise, if you need to reach your child, please contact the high school office, and we will promptly relay the message.
We kindly ask for your support in the following ways:
Discuss the Policy: Please take a moment to talk with your child about the importance of our personal electronic device policy and the potential consequences of not following it.
Reinforce Expectations: Remind your child to turn off their personal electronic devices and store them securely each morning before arriving at school.
Encourage Healthy Habits: Promoting responsible device use at home can reinforce balanced screen time and meaningful engagement in non-digital activities.
We understand that personal electronic devices are a part of modern life and can be valuable tools when used appropriately. Our goal is not to eliminate their use entirely, but to ensure that they support—rather than hinder—students' academic and social growth.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We appreciate your continued partnership in creating the best learning environment for all of our students.
Thank you for your support and commitment to SGHS.
