DESCRIPTION: English I is a basic introductory course covering a wide variety of authors from many literary genres. Vocabulary development, the conventions of Standard English, literary analysis, the writing process, and research are emphasized in the course.

DESCRIPTION: College Preparatory English I is a year-long course encompassing two main areas: literature and composition. Students will study a survey of world literature of various genres. Composition is taught through the writing process. Grammar rules and new vocabulary words are applied to the process of composing. A research project is completed. An emphasis on applying critical thinking skills to prepare students for further studies on the college level is an important component of this course. This is a weighted course that will require comprehensive finals.

DESCRIPTION: The English II class is a year-long course which encompasses two main areas: literature and composition. Students are introduced to a survey of world literature in the areas of short story, essay, poetry, drama, and fiction. Composition is taught through the writing process. Grammar rules and new vocabulary words are applied to the process of composing. The development of paragraphs is stressed throughout the course. A research project is also written on the topic of careers.

DESCRIPTION: Students in English III continue the study of the writing process. Students study American literature and complete a research-based project. Several novels by American authors are also studied.

DESCRIPTION: College Preparatory English III emphasizes writing in the 1st semester and is structured for college credit through SEMO. The 1st semester final is a portfolio of drafts and final essays completed throughout the semester. The 2nd semester includes strong emphasis on literature and reading comprehension. Literature is strictly American literature. One play and two other major works are required. This is a weighted course that will require comprehensive finals and a course project or research paper. DESCRIPTION: English IV emphasizes reading and writing as well as listening and speaking skills. Writing for areas of technical preparation including vocabulary, occupational preparation, and a research project will be completed in this course. Literature and composition are utilized together through the writing process.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS OR PROJECTS: Literary analysis, daily reading assignments, daily written assignments, multiple 3-6-page college-level research papers, and at least four major literary works
DESCRIPTION: The fall semester course is a rhetoric and research class from Southeast Missouri State University, EN140. Emphasizes reading and writing skills with some work on listening and speaking as well. The spring semester course is a literary analysis course from Southwest Missouri State University, LI256. The reading is, for the most part, a chronological survey of British literature from the Middle Ages through the Modern Age. In addition to this, at least four British works are read throughout the year. The writing in this course is traditional expository writing. Throughout the course much of the writing is literature based. This is a weighted course that will require comprehensive finals and completion of a course project or research paper.
