ACT Test Prep 0.50 Credit 1 SEMESTER

DESCRIPTION: This class is designed to assist students in preparing for the ACT test. This class will provide an overview of the test, practical test taking strategies, and an opportunity to take a variety of practice tests, both written and online. Students will explore question styles and samples for all four areas of the ACT test (reading, English, math, and science), as well as sample prompts for the writing portion, if necessary. Many skills and strategies will be addressed including: what the real test looks like, how to take a timed test, how to approach questions that you don’t know how to answer, how to organize and write an essay in 40 minutes, how to maximize what you know, and other test taking strategies.
Broadcasting 0.50 Credit 1 SEMESTER
Grade Level(s): 10, 11, and 12
PREREQUISITES: Permission of instructor or B or higher in Video Production or Multimedia-Video. Must have experience using Adobe Photoshop and Video Production. Knowledge using Canva is helpful. Desire to broadcast SGHS sports is preferred. A background in (English writing) is a bonus. Consistent attendance is required.
MAJOR REQUIREMENTS OR PROJECTS: Students must be available a minimum of one evening per week to work our home sporting events. (Please Note: Maybe more based on class size). Students in this course will write and produce six sports highlight packages a year. They must attend assigned sporting events, reocrd the games, and interview players and coaches to create highligh stories. Students also produce several live events with play-by-play announcers, color commentary, and possible sideline reporting. The program is a high school version of ESPN. Also, the highlight packages are used for the sports segment in our daily television/podcast show, Down to the Wire. In addition to video projects, students learn studio jobs to write, direct, and produce a weekly show.
DESCRIPTION: Students will gain a working foundational knowledge in sports journalism and/or photographer skills while taking this class. They will be taught the skills and knowledge on how to deal with the many pressures and challenges of producing a weekly news podcast. Students will research, gather, and analyze information that will be used to create audio and video productions for broadcast to a variety of audiences. Throughout this course students will learn basic journalistic skills, video production skills, and technological skills. The class will also feature topics such as broadcast preparation, doing play-by-play, color commentating, audio/visual wiring and proper use of equipment, broadcasting critiques, slang, and sythesizing an athletic production. The course requires students to have consistent attendance and after school availability for home games which the class broadcasts.
Note: To be eligible for the class the student must have the prerequisites stated and will take a quick Pre-Course application for class eligibility.

DESCRIPTION: Students' cadet experiences are enriched by education-related assignments which will be submitted throughout the semester. There is an opportunity for students to earn A+ hours of service in this class. Placements for this class will be arranged through the counselor's office or through the office of the A+ Coordinator. DESCRIPTION: Cadet Field Experience allows juniors or seniors to observe and assist teachers in the classroom. The purpose is to provide students with an opportunity to explore careers in education and to provide positive mentoring/tutoring to students. There is an opportunity for students to earn A+ hours of service in this class. Placements for this class will be arranged through the counselor's office or through the office of the A+ Coordinator. MAJOR REQUIREMENTS OR PROJECTS: Completion of Major School Improvement Projects.
DESCRIPTION: The School Development Seminar will provide an opportunity for our students to help grow, build, and create their high school experience. Students in this course will complete school improvement projects, enhance the school's spirit and image, create school marketing ideas, build social media highlights, and work closely with new student orientations. The class will allow students to collaborate and conceptualize various improvement ideas and areas from students, staff, and administration throughout the high school. They will be responsible for planning and implementing various school social gatherings and marketing them to create a more positive and inclusive school climate and culture which all stakeholders will value.
