DIFFERENT TYPES OF GENRES
Here are a few examples of movie genres along with some of their key characteristics. Remember: movies (and TV shows, books), can be a mixture of genres, like Romantic-Comedies, or Action-filled dramas etc. These are just a few main examples, and there are many sub-genres within these genres as well. What are your favourites?
Key Characteristics: Fast-paced, fight scenes, explosions, epic chases, explosions and high adrenaline. Many Marvel/superhero movies fall under the action category.
Key Characteristics: Funny (of course), lots of jokes, silly characters, witty; the goal is to make you laugh or to make light of situations.
Key Characteristics: Usually revolves around two people falling in love, and there is almost always something that comes between them that acts as a conflict or snag in the storyline. Will they live happily ever after?
Key Characteristics: Boo! Horror films are meant to scare you and shock you. Scenes might be dark, have a lot of gore and blood, or play with your mind. There might be scenes that build up and lead to something that jumps out and scares you.
Key Characteristics: Documentaries are non-fiction pieces that often focus on a specific person or an event. In either case, there are usually many interviews with different people that recount their version of the events (good or bad) or their view of the person and how they might have influenced or impacted them.
Key Characteristics: This genre includes, you guessed it, music! These films have many scenes where the characters break out into song and dance to help tell a story.
Key Characteristics: Mysteries more often than not aim to solve a crime that happened. Who did it? What weapons were used? They also often use "red herrings", or points in the plot that are meant to distract you and keep you guessing.
Key Characteristics: These films don't necessarily follow a specific plot, and can be based more on feelings, art techniques, and abstract visuals. These films have more flexibility in terms of style and tone because they do not follow the conventional rules of other genres.
Key Characteristics: Animation can include 2D, 3D, stop motion, and frame-by-frame, or a mixture of those styles. Animated films can have a storyline that is rooted in another genre, such as comedy or romance, but the animation style is distinct and gives the film an overall look that wouldn't otherwise be achieved if it were live-action.
