Ryanne, an optimistic and upbeat senior who loves to dance and cheer, plans to graduate with a 4.0 and try out for a nationally ranked college dance team. Due to a serious brain tumor, her senior year has been turned upside down as she now has to balance her plans for graduating on time with the difficulty of undergoing regular treatment. Ryanne’ s wish is to go to Hawaii with her sister for some relaxing time in the sun.Â
In order to help Ryanne fulfill her dream, our current fundraising efforts include selling raffle tickets for baskets full of amazing things. There are 12 baskets valued from $115-$835!!! Tickets are ONLY $1 each. So come check out the baskets and grab a Make-A-Wish shirt while you are in Room B71! Shirts are $10 each. All proceeds go to Make-A-Wish and our goal is $10,000!

Tech Expo at ISU for All Students – Thurs., March 6th
ISU’s Tech Expo is the opportunity for Highland students to learn more about Idaho State’s College of Technology and their many – fabulous – programs. On Thursday, March 6th (next week!), we will take students to the Tech Expo at the ICCU Dome on ISU’s campus. The event is hand-on, engaging, and inspiring. Highland will take one bus to the event (50 students) for an hour. There are still spots available, but you have to sign up with the CCAs to join us and for your absence from school for that time period to be excused. Learn more at isu.edu/techexpo .Visit the CCAs in C-36 to get on the list.
Higher Ed + Morning for Juniors, March 12th
Every spring, Highland invites local colleges and universities as well as our military representatives, the Department of Labor, the tribes, local experts on apprenticeships, financial aid and scholarships to school to get the wheels of our junior students turning. It’s called Higher Ed + Morning. Juniors will choose three sessions from an array of offerings (eleven local colleges / training programs), plus professional presentations. It will take place during the first and second hours of Wednesday, March 19th and all junior students with classes at Highland in the morning are expected to participate.
Seniors: ISU Academic Signing Event, Wednesday, March 19th
If you are a senior, have been accepted to Idaho State University, and been awarded a grid scholarship upon your acceptance, we want to honor that achievement with an Academic Signing event on Wednesday, March 19th. During the 1st hour of classes, we will gather in the library, have you sign a certificate of achievement, and ply you with donuts, cheers, and morning beverages. Families and fans are also invited. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.Â
Scholarship Season
Seniors, it’s Scholarship Season . . . now through about mid-April. Please apply to institutional scholarships, state scholarships, local scholarships, national scholarships. The Senior Google Classroom has a bounty of scholarships we know about, but students have to act. It takes some time and some work, but the benefits at the end can be huge and life-changing. Don’t leave scholarship money on the table. Ask the CCAs for help or visit us with your questions.
Juniors – DO Take the SATs ! ! ! !
There are juniors out there who know that the SATs will be offered at school on April 9th and are thinking that would be a great day to skip school. No! Don’t do it! Please – please – take your SATs. Those scores will be helpful to you in all kinds of ways. They can be used to assess your readiness for an apprenticeship, are used for placement in 2-year and 4-year training and college programs, and give you a sense of how you perform in a testing situation (because, for sure, there will be more and other tests you take in your life). Do a little preparation ahead of April 9th (just look for free SAT prep online) and do your best that day, which is all we can ask.
Construction Combine – April 2 & 3
Looking ahead, the annual Construction Combine will take place this year on Thursday and Friday, April 2nd and 3rd at Home Depot. Participating students will be introduced to a variety of trades and skills and can also demonstrate the skills they already have. Instructors will be local contractors who can identify students they might want to hire during the summer months. It’s a win-win. Students who want to participate have to be in good standing with strong attendance, and must commit to attend for all of both days. Each Pocatello high school only has a few slots. The application to participate is only open until March 21st, and the link to apply is below.

FAFSA Completion – We Can Do Better
Highlanders, right now we have a FAFSA completion rate of 36 percent. All I’m going to say is we can do better. The FAFSA is an assessment, but it’s also a gateway to financial aid and scholarships. Please get it done and if you have any questions at all, please the CCAs know and we will be glad to help.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The second trimester will wrap this week. Gadzooks, it has zipped by. The rest of the year will be over in a shot, so buckle up and be ready to get things accomplished on your to-do list.
